The New York Times Company launches ShifD
The New York Times Company announced the beta launch of ShifD, a data portability application enabling users to seamlessly shift content between their computers and mobile handsets, effectively eliminating the need to separately save certain information to both devices. ShifD enables users to add and save content in three categories: Notes, Links and Places; according to the Times, users may update information via any web browser, text message or Adobe AIR-based downloadable application, and regardless of method, all data is saved to the user's ShifD account and automatically updated across all devices. ShifD is optimized for most mobile phones and BlackBerry devices.
"ShifD is an experiment in giving users the power to bring their content with them by easily shifting it among all of their web-enabled devices," said New York Times Company vice president of research and development operations Michael Zimbalist in a prepared statement. "We see a future for device-independent media, with convergence around the user experience and not any particular delivery platform. Developing services that allow users to access content wherever they are and on whichever device they choose is an important part of our strategy."
