Apple preps 'iPhone 2.0' release

Apple has announced the immediate availability of iPhone 2.0 software to developers.

Scheduled for release this June, the beta release includes both the iPhone SDK as well as new enterprise features such as support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync. Apple also introduced its new iPhone Developer Program and the new App Store, which lets users browse, search, purchase and wirelessly download third party applications directly onto their iPhone or iPod touch.

Any developer can now download the beta iPhone SDK for free and run the iPhone Simulator on a Mac. It will allow them to create apps that leverage the device’s touchscreen UI, animation technology, built-in three-axis accelerometer and geographical location technology.

It’s effectively iPhone 2.0. And it means that a lot of the ‘cool’ apps that have been unofficially created for the device – like tge eBook reader, iRadio and Guitar simulator – will be available ‘legally’ and direct from the device.

The App store is creating a real buzz. Developers set the price for their applications—including free—and retain 70 per cent of all sales revenues.
