NextWave Launches TV Service For WiMax Networks
NextWave Wireless is launching a TV service today called MXtv that will allow WiMax networks to broadcast TV, audio and other media to a range of devices, such as phones, media players, handheld gaming or navigational devices and DVD players. To deliver MXtv, NextWave said it has signed a joint development agreement with Huawei Technologies.
Nextwave (NSDQ: WAVE) says the video quality can provide up to 30 frames per minute, and can offer more than 300 broadcast channels over 10 MHz of spectrum. The operator will also be able to tailor the content on a geographical and individual user basis. Nextwave is banking on the service to be more cost-effective for the operator than providing TV over traditional cellular networks. MXtv is expected to be available by June.
NextWave didn't mention if either of the two main U.S. WiMax operators???Clearwire (NSDQ: CLWR) or Sprint (NYSE: S) Nextel???were interested in the technology. Last year, Clearwire announced a joint agreement with ICO Global Communications to complete a mobile video trial that was expected to begin in early 2008 in Raleigh, N.C.
