O2 to offer 5m tracks from Napster

O2 UK has become latest network to host Napster music download service.

It will offer a full track mobile music download service, comprising five million tracks from all major labels, through O2 Active. The Napster service supports dual delivery of tracks to both phone and PC. Single tracks will initially be priced at 99p or five for £4, with mobile tracks encoded in AAC, and PC tracks in WMA. The Napster service will be accessible initially on over 30 different handsets.

The move brings O2 right back into the full track music space, where it has significantly lagged its UK rivals especially Orange, Vodafone and 3.

For Napster it’s another indication of the value it places on mobile as a means to increase its distribution and brand. The company is now live with DoCoMo, KDDI, AT&T, Dobson, SunCom, TMN, O2 (Ireland), Swisscom, Entel PCS and Claro (Puerto Rico).
