Jupiter Lander

Jupiter Lander is a blast from the past originally created for Commodore computers but soon finding its way to mobile via an updated version.  As in the original, it is your job as an astronaut to land the spaceship safely onto the planet’s surface using only the craft’s thrusters and the planet’s gravity.

Important to the successful execution of landing is keeping an eye on fuel consumption and the speed reading.  These not only provide useful information on craft conditions, but also dictate what the total score will be if the landing is nailed.  That’s because bonus points can be scored by landing perfectly should you follow the gauges to a tee.

The game is simple to understand in concept, but the reason it’s endeared itself over the years is most likely because it is quite challenging.  There are a few “gimme” stages but some of them are so intricate with jagged paths that there’s a great deal of pressure put on the player to maneuver carefully.  Aside from that, the controls are reversed and that leads to a general confusion on what button to press when wanting to go a certain direction, and when the pressure is on, it’s quite easy to panic and go the wrong way.

This new version has been improved graphically with more color and depth than the original vector graphics and includes some very nice particle effects plus smooth zooming in and out as the lander approaches its mark.  For those seeking a more throwback experience, the classic look of the game can be unlocked as well.

Jupiter Lander isn’t scheduled to launch just yet so we haven’t been able to fully get behind the controls to get our full take on it, but we will soon.  In the meantime, you can probably find a decent version of it online to practice.
